HISTORY OF THE HOSPITAL 

I. CREATION
• 18 March 1928 – Start of the construction

II./1932-1945/
• April 1932 – Opening of the hospital
• The first manager - Dr. Dimo Cholakov

III./1945-1950/
• Head Physician Dr. Georgi Popmarinov opened obstetrical-gynaecological department in 1948. Children’s and internal diseases departments were set up. Blood donation and blood transfusion were introduced, blood bank was set up.

IV./1950-1959/

• Head Physician Dr.Stefan Stoenchev
• 1955- Construction of the New hospital was started / Today - obstetrical-gynaecological department/
• 1959 – The Hospital was opened consisting of Children’s department, obstetrical
gynaecological department, surgical department with operation room. In the third
period were opened the eye and ear department, dermal-venerial department, nervous
diseases department and rheumo-cardeological department

V./1960-1999/
• 1959 Kardzhali was declared as a county center. It became the county hospital. Polyclinical and hospital activities were extended. Dr. Atanas Dafovski.
became the Head Physician. He established therapeutical medical attendance at the
Kardzhali hospital and a modern base for health services in the city.
• 17.01.1971 – Construction of the new hospital was started – the present 10-storey building
• 29.04.1977 – Opening of the new building. Bed space has increased to 900 pcs., thus enabling opening of the new departments – gastroenterological, Children’s department, Infectious department, urology, traumatology, endocrinology etc.
• 1984 – Dr. Zheljazko Dzhangozov was appointed a Head Physician. Development of the hospital as a leading health protection establishment continued. A new polyclinic building was opened. Dr. Georgi Georgiev was in charge of pre-hospital attendance.
• 1998 – Dr.Vassil Likomanov became the Head Physician of the hospital.
The hospital entered on the new phase of the health reform.

VI./after 1999/
• 1999 – The hospital was given a new name – Multi-profile hospital for active treatment
• April 1999 – Medical council took a decision MHAT to bear the name of Dr.Atanas Dafovski.
• 26.04.2002 – Board of Directors elected Dr.Todor Cherkezov as Executive Director of “DR.ATANAS DAFOVSKI” AD MHAT
• 22.06.2002 – President of Bulgaria Mr. Georgi Parvanov visited the hospital
• 12.05.2003 – “Avicena” Medical Centre was opened as an associated company with subject of activity pre-hospital specialized aid. Official opening was made
in the presence of Dr.Petko Salchev – Deputy Minister of Health and Dr.Andrej Kehaiov - chairman of Bulgarian Doctors Union
• 11.03.2004 – Mrs.Kati Pardju – spouse of the USA Ambassador in Bulgaria visited the hospital
• 30.04.2004 – Mrs.Zorka Parvanova – spouse of Bulgarian President visited the hospital and opened the restored Choldren’s department.
• 11.05.2004 – Hospital was visited by Mr.Slavcho Bogoev – Minister of health, Mr.Ljubomir Kumanov – Deputy Minister and Associate Professor Krassimir Gigov – Chief Secretary
• 06.01.2005 – Hospital was given a Quality certificate EN ISO 9001:2000
• 11.06.2005 – Opening of the restored maternity department and neonatological department by Mr. Slavcho Bogoev – Minister of health, Mr.Ljubomir Kumanov – Deputy Minister
• 02.05.2006 – Accredited evaluation for the complete medical activity EXCELLENT FOR THE PERIOD OF 5 YEARS
